For many years Freemasonry has been inward looking and as we have gone about our business helping people to develop their minds, their social skills and their friendships, we have left the sceptics to form their own opinion of what it is we do.
This has led to imaginations running wild, especially online, and a picture of oddly dressed men drinking blood from skulls and sacrificing goats can be the first thing that pops into someone’s head when asked about Freemasonry.
This could not be further from the truth.
Yes, we do wear regalia that has evolved from the ancient stonemasons’ aprons, who were an integral part of building our history with the development of our great Cities, Churches and Cathedrals.
We do perform ritual in the form of four short plays, these tell a story and follow the development of a new mason through the three degrees of Craft Masonry and the final step into the Royal Arch.
Learning our ritual is an important part of developing our member’s minds, as in it contains lessons and morals that can be transferred to our everyday lives, another part of making good men better.
And we are certainly not a secret society as is often mooted, as you are reading this website explaining what Freemasonry is all about, it is not much of a secret.
So a society of men who pride themselves on being upright members of the community, morally strong with a keen desire to improve their minds, their social network and make a difference……. not a goat in sight!
